Frequently Asked Questions about Super PowderWhat is Super Powder?Nutri-Binder® SUPER POWDER is a new idea...a new concept. SUPER POWDER represents a new generation of high performance binders. This is a binder that's not just another "low-cost by-product." SUPER POWDER has been designed specifically to provide high quality performance when used at concentrations far below than that normally used by conventional binders. Special development efforts have been aimed at developing a product providing (1) a high surface area, (2) quick film forming ability, (3) more film tack and adhesion, (4) greatly improved film strength, (5) quicker reactivity with steam, (6) completely non-hygroscopic, (7) quicker film wetting characteristics, (8) better film flexibility, (9) good nutritional values, (10) more rapid digestibility, and (11) excellent palatability -SUPER POWDER is a "designed builder"....it is not a by-product. What is the Composition of SUPER POWDER?SUPER POWDER is based on natural grain or derivatized natural grains. It is composed of controlled depolymerization of the natural cellulose, proteins, starches, oils, and waxes that occur naturally in grain. The ultra-high temperature processing done in the process results in a controlled distribution of low-molecular weight polymers of cellulose, starch, and proteins. These low molecular weight polymers result in film formation that provides ultra-high utilization of the binding potential in the grain components than what is found in more conventional products. How is SUPER POWDER applied?SUPER POWDER can be applied in the same ways that conventional dry-powdered binders are used. However, it is recommended that SUPER POWDER be added as the last item in the mixer. This is because the small concentration required to treat a ton of feed needs to be uniformly spread throughout the mixture in order to achieve the highest performance as measured by the Pellet Durability Index (PDI). Conventional powdered binders are usually highly hygroscopic. They can cause severe coating of the blender internals and sometimes require frequent clean up. Since SUPER POWDER is non-hygroscopic, it will not pick up a lot of moisture and become gummy prior to hitting the dies as many of the more conventional binder products tend to do. What is the Recommended Rate of Use with SUPER POWDER?SUPER POWDER can be used as a pellet binder over a wide range of concentrations. However, it is designed to be used in the 5-10 lb. per ton of finished feed product range in order to achieve a high PDI. SUPER POWDER was designed to provide an extremely high performance product for use at a low concentration. Although usually not required to get good pellet performance, SUPER POWDER can be used at ultra high concentrations to achieve certain special end properties where required. In special pellet situations, concentrations of 15-50% can be used without causing problems of palatability. How does SUPER POWDER work?Small particles of SUPER POWDER are mixed until fully dispersed in a dry feed formulation along with all the other feed ingredients. It is extremely important that SUPER POWDER be put in the blender/mixer as the last ingredient (top of the mixer). Because of the small concentration of SUPER POWDER required, it is essential to add it as the last ingredient so it doesn't remain on the bottom of the mixer. This should be done to achieve maximum dispersion of the SUPER POWDER in the feed ingredient mixer. When applied properly, the extremely small, dry particles of SUPER POWDER will coat each individual feed additive uniformly. As the mixed ingredients move through the system and reach the pre-conditioning unit on the pellet mill, SUPER POWDER will quickly wet and partially or completely dissolve in the small amount of water present. The action of the steam and moisture present will activate SUPER POWDER. This partial solution or suspension will wet, flow, and form a highly adhesive film on each one of the feed ingredient particles. Good mixing in the pre-conditioner will cause each particle to become well coated with the binder film. The increased temperature in the pre-conditioner will accelerate the dissolving/dispersing step required for SUPER POWDER to function. In addition, the increase in temperature will assist in allowing the binder film to more rapidly wet and spread around and into the feed particle surface. Ideally, in order to realize maximum binder benefits, all of the particles should be uniformly coated with a thin film of soluble binder. In addition, if properly applied, the soluble SUPER POWDER film should penetrate and result in an increase in the overall strength of the pellet. No vacant or uncoated areas should exist on the particles. Wherever there are areas that are not coated (holiday), these areas will be highly susceptible to stress cracks and complete breaks during subsequent handling operations. This in turn can result in the generation of fines. As the coated feed ingredients move into the die section, the roller applies compaction and extreme pressure by forcing the material into the dies. This causes friction and results in a significant increase in temperature. As the feed product is forced or extruded through the die holes, temperatures are increased, particularly at the pellet die interface, to as high as 375 on the surface of the die, because of the added frictional heat. At this point, the binder is further smeared or coated on the external surface. It is theorized that some migration of the SUPER POWDER to the surface of the pellet tends to occur at this time. This concentration effect tends to (1) strengthen the surface of the pellet against abrasion and (2) assist in providing a pellet that tends to have some slight waterproof characteristics. The film of SUPER POWDER that surrounds and holds all of the individual feed particles together acts as a glue between the feed particles--making them less susceptible to break off and cause fines. Is Mixing Important In The Use of SUPER POWDER?Yes. Adequate and uniform mixing is probably the most important step in the successful use of SUPER POWDER. Ideally, every available surface of each individual feed particle should be uniformly coated with SUPER POWDER in order to make sure that a good film is formed once the product is steam or moisture activated. Under most circumstances, SUPER POWDER should be the last ingredient in the blender/mixer. Unlike some of the more conventional binders that are highly hygroscopic, SUPER POWDER will not pick up moisture and cause mixing or plugging problems at any point in this cycle. Is SUPER POWDER Environmentally Safe?Yes. SUPER POWDER is produced by a novel process from whole grain. It is designed to be both safe for personnel and the environment. It is completely non-toxic, non-allergenic, and non-hazardous. Is SUPER POWDER Nutritional?Yes. SUPER POWDER is produced from whole grain. It retains the nutritional value of whole grain. Since SUPER POWDER, when used properly, is an effective binder at concentrations well below the conventional binder concentrations, little nutritive values will normally be realized because of the small concentrations used. However, SUPER POWDER is equivalent in nutrition to grain on a pound-for-pound basis. One extra nutritional advantage of SUPER POWDER is that it is much more readily digestible than whole grain. The novel high temperature/high pressure Industrial Grain Products process control depolymerizes all of the grain components into lower molecular weight constituents. This in turn increases the rate of digestibility. Animal feeding studies in cattle indicate that whole grain was utilized only to the extent of 7-10% within a 24 hour period, whereas the animals digested SUPER POWDER up to a maximum of 92% in 24 hours. Is SUPER POWDER Hygroscopic? Most high performance binders are severely hygroscopic; i.e., they pick up and absorb moisture very rapidly. This characteristic of absorbing moisture can create severe operating conditions in feed mill pelletizing and forming operations. In addition, the hygroscopic nature of these binders makes it very difficult to handle in bulk. Even long term storage of bagged material can result in unusable, solid blocks of binder. SUPER POWDER is non-hygroscopic. It absorbs or picks up very little moisture. It is not necessary to shut down to clean "binder build up" with SUPER POWDER. It flows readily in handling equipment. SUPER POWDER has an indefinite storage life when normal weather protection is provided. How is SUPER POWDER Packaged?SUPER POWDER is non-hygroscopic; it can be handled in standard bags. Since the concentration required to be effective in feed forming operations in low, bagged products---even in large operations---are usually satisfactory. How Do I Set Up A Test Trial With SUPER POWDER?Call your Industrial Grain Products representative for a discussion of the specific details of a test trial. Generally, your representative will request that you submit a 50 lb. sample of your feed formulation to the IGP Technical Service Laboratory for SUPER POWDER pelletizing tests. Once these are completed, a technical service report will be sent to you along with specific recommendations of starting test concentrations, application methods, temperatures, etc. Following this, IGP will furnish sufficient test sample to conduct the testing. When permissible and possible, IGP will furnish technical sales personnel to assist in conducting the tests, gathering process data during testing and analyzing the results. How Does A User Benefit From The Use Of SUPER POWDER?A properly designed SUPER POWDER program will provide the pelletized feed manufacturer a high PDI pellet at a competitive feed cost. Use of SUPER POWDER will reduce a significant amount of operating costs normally encountered with more conventional, highly hygroscopic binders. Less down time for clean up and less problems with extended storage of binder product will be encountered with SUPER POWDER. Should I Consider The Unit Cost Per Pound Of SUPER POWDER?No. SUPER POWDER should be evaluated, not on the unit cost per pound of the binder, but on the overall effect on your final, pelletized feed costs. You can buy a lower cost binder product, but a realistic cost evaluation should be made on what a binder does to the overall cost of your finished pelleted feed and your operating cost. This cost in turn should take into account the quality of your end product. If you want a high DPI and if you want a minimum of operating cost, then you should give SUPER POWDER a real trial.
