Industrial Grain Products produces a number of specialty chemical products for use in foundry sands.

A wide variety of molding sands are used to form castings prepared from many types of molten metal and metal alloys. Each molding sand is formu-lated to meet the demands of each special set of conditions. Variations in the types of metals or metal alloys, temperatures, size casting, shape, and intricacies of the casting, cooling times, surface coatings required, pouring techniques, etc., are just a few of the many variables encountered in foundry metal pouring/forming operations. Thus the sands that are used to form the molds for the hot metals are highly variable in composition.

Although there are specialty oil-base green molding sands, the water-base sands that use silica sand, bentonite clay as a binder, and water are the more widely used sand molding systems. Numerous types of additives are then added to this base sand to control the properties of both the sand and the finished casting.

Industrial Grain Products currently furnishes a premium foundry sand additive... FIBERCAST. It is based on IGP’s unique manufacturing technology. IGP has a variety of organophilic materials—materials which have altered wetting and solvency characteristics.

FIBERCAST is based on a novel cellulose microfiber which have been designed to preferentially oil wet rather than water wet. This hydrophobic/ oleophilic characteristic imparts performance unlike any other cellulosic additives. FIBER-CAST works well in green sand systems especially for casting aluminum and magnesium alloys, as well as brass, bronze, and other ferrous alloys.

A FIBERCAST clay sand system is easy to use and simple to control. Maintained as low as 1% to 2% by weight, it often allows elimination of special costly facing sands.
